Do you really need hundreds of brands just as the Inner Sphere has hunderds of mech designs? Probably not. In other words, no, it doesn't really make sense in the same way that most of our contemporary consumer goods don't either. For example, Davion's are notorious for their love affair with the AC, hence the Jager probably being more useful in their military than say Kurita (who have their own love affair with PPCs). Later refits and tech advances go some way towards refitting poor performing designs, but there's always an imbalance.įrom a fluff point of view, it makes sense: houses had access to different designs and generally preferred certain tech and tactics. Many well-known mech designs are sub-optimal in 3025, the Jager being a prime case of this. Is there anything I'm missing? Is there some hidden advantage of the Jagermech I'm not seeing? Or should I just go ahead and use the Catapult whenever I can. The Jager seems like a weakly armed and armored, ammo filled walking bomb compared to the nimble and more versatile Catapult. So looking at all of this while they both fit the long ranged fire support role it seems to me there would be no reason (other than battle value) to choose the Jagermech over the Catapult. But I've found a LRM15 tends to do about seven damage on average so the damage seems to be about the same at long range either way. As for damage, ignoring the medium lasers, provided that all the to hit rolls succeed the Jagermech is guaranteed two groups of five damage and two groups of two whereas the Catapult can do up to six groups of five if the cluster hits are kind. While the Jagermech's AC2s have slightly better range than the Catapult's LRM15s it's AC5s have slightly worse range. From what I can see the Catapult has four more tons of armor, jump jets, moves the same speed, has more heat sinks and has more medium lasers for backup. I've stuck with 3025 tech for the time being and I'm struggling to see why the JM6-S should ever be used in favor of the CPLT-C1. So I got the Battletech starter set recently and have been playing fairly casually.
